Doesn't wildcard include everything

Hi

I have a trouble about Search.

I am sure there is a pdf containing a reference paper:

Schaepman-Strub, G., Schaepman, M. E., Painter, T. H., Dangel, S., & Martonchik, J. V.
(2006). Reflectance quantities in optical remote sensing—definitions and case
studies. Remote Sensing Environ., 103(1), 27−42.

I use “Reflectance quantities in optical remote sensing*” in Search term and PDF in Field List, contains in Comparison List and the Search whole library. I couldn’t find any one.

If I use “Reflectance quantities in optical remote sensing—definitions and case”, then I can have it.

Why?  Doesn’t wildcard include everything behind sensing?

Thank you for reply.

CH

I don’t think endnote uses the asterisk as a wild card, that is what the “contains” does.

Part of the problem might be in the way you’ve constructed the search sequence. If I’m interpreting your description correctly, it sounds like you’re stringing together two separate search fields:  the title of the article with the wildcard asterick ( * ), and the second “PDF” field (as shown in the Options pull-down menu).

Searching for PDF

The “Options” pull-down menu lists options for searching by: PDF, Any FIeld + PDF. You selected “PDF” which limits searches only to PDFs and negates looking for the title search phrase. However, since you want to search on two fields, (title and PDF), change the PDF field name to “File Attachments” and enter .pdf in the search box.

Searching by Title (partial title, wildcard)

Now for searching by the partial title listing.  I am puzzled, though, why you include a wildcard within the title (Reflective qualities in optimal remote sensing)?  It seems it would be sufficient just to use the title or even a shorter version of it(enclosed it within quotation marks) in the search field: “Reflective qualities” [short version] or “Reflective qualities in optimal remote sensing” [longer version].

If you happened to have other articles which included the term “remote sensing” you could add another search row and use the term with a wildcard [remote sens*] to focus the search on other references which may include the term.

This now sets up the search terms to: 1) look for the title and locate a pdf file (as identified by the .pdf file extension).
