The one basic feature missing is the ability to set up an on-premise server, as can be done with Citavi (and even former Reference Manager). Using the Amazon cloud for library sharing with colleagues at work is a no-go at a non-US government research institute, and a real pain on the institute’s intranet having to use read-only workarounds! Never mind the ridiculously smartphone-oriented UI (managed to convince our IT to NOT upgrade from X9 – we use it for serious work, and also don’t need to double our library space due to this half-baked [program 32, database 64], Apple-centered bit-doubling).
Same issue here.
Windows 11. EndNote Bld 16860.
Hey EndNote: Like others, I now have to close EN20 multiple times, and it is a pain in the arse.
I have just closed EN20 and it re-opened FIVE times. Do you really think that this is acceptable? Are you people serious? When I click on “close”, I expect software in 2023 to save whatever is necessary, and then close. Simple really. This is what software was doing decades ago, but apparently Clarivate thinks that EN20 users would prefer to have a program that like a zombie is impossible to kill. So that instead of a clean and easy closing, I have to waste time closing multiple times. And this is all because YOU
made some change that was completely unnecessary.
YOU people caused this problem with an update, so how about YOU fix it without telling me to download EN21? And yes, I am criticising people, EndNote programmers and EndNote quality testers in particular. Did your programmers or testers even close EN20 once when they were testing it? Did you even ask just one user who doesn’t work for Clarivate to test it before it was released? Do you seriously expect me to believe that the problem only became apparent AFTER the update was released?
You have known about this issue for months now, and you still haven’t fixed it. I’m not interested in the all-new, deluxe, you beaut singing and dancing EN21 that you keep pushing towards me. I want EN20, the program that worked (reasonably well) to actually work. That’s what I paid for. I didn’t pay for updates that simply don’t work.
And to be honest, how do I know that EN21 will be any better? Why should I trust you? Based on your performance on this issue, it’s pretty clear that any current EN20 user would be very wary about updating to EN21.
Where I live, consumer legislation would describe the current version of EN20 as “not of merchantable quality” and “not fit for purpose”.
Here’s a couple of suggestions:
-
IMMEDIATELY release a patch fixing the problem. After all, you caused it, so you should be able to fix it! And you’ve had months to do this.
-
SACK all the programmers involved in the update that caused the problem.
-
SACK all the testers who obviously never turned off the updated version of EN20.
-
Treat your users with a bit of respect.
-
Stop posting mealy-mouthed replies about how important your users are. Instead post a link to a patch.
John.
I have Endnote21 and the problem has disappeared. However, I believe that the fix will be applied to the next update of EndNote20. (V20.6 I believe)
The problem was identified in V20 and a fix worked on. However, the codebase worked on became V21. So they have to patch V20 as a separate branch. I would expect the fix to be here in a couple of weeks at most.
Oh great! So instead of a fixed X20, as X20.6 we will get X21 with the new features disabled but all the new X21 bugs left in. I suppose there may be some pluses if the general functionality is improved back to the halcyon days of X9…
What I said was: “I believe that the fix will be applied to the next update of EndNote20. (V20.6 )” Clarivate do intend to fix the re-opening problem in V20. I would be somewhat surprised if the patch has not now been released. (I am on V21, so I don’t see V20 patches)
I don’t see any chat about not being able to change the layout of the window in v20 (and I’m assuming v21).
In X9 you could arrange the EndNote window in at least 3 different ways, with the reference showing at the bottom or at the side, etc.
Are we EVER going to be able to do this again??
I read that V21.1 now has the ability to open a reference in a seperate window, just like X9 used to. So when is it going to be added back to V20? Or was the policy to really take things away in V20 so they can be sold back to you in V21?
