End note crashes when compiling master document

Using end note x4 and Microsoft word 2010 when I compile my separate chapters into the master document all the references remain after each chapter at not at the end. If I try to update citations then word and end note freeze and if I open endnote the updating cancels in word and nothing changes. How can I merge the references into one list at the end successfully

In both resources I found, you should first save each document with unformatted citations before combining the chapters.
