EndNote for Word 2016 for Mac.

Can someone please tell me what you need to do to get it to work? I have downloaded today the new endnote update, tried to find it on word 2016, but cannot.

Thanks,

ana

On some Macs, I am seeing a 5003 error when launching Word 2016:

“CWYW is not compatible with this version of Word. Please contact support”

This error appears to be incorrect.

-OS X 10.11.3 El Capitan

-Office 2016 15.18 clean install. Office 365 license.

-Office 2011 is NOT installed.

-EndNote X7 7.5 clean install.

-User account is a local admin.

-Never had the beta installed.

-Rebooted, etc.

-Plug-in is installed at  /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office365/User Content.localized/Startup.localized/Word/EndNote CWYW Word 2016.bundle

Ill submit a ticket.

Can you pls post the download link. I have googled w/o success and the new product page seems to only show 7.4.

TY

Les

Hello Les,

Resolution to my issue posted above:

Word 2016 (and Office 2016) must be activated via Office365 prior to EndNote CWYW functioning. Not sure if this is a bug or a MS-imposed restriction.

Having uninstalled endnote x7, installed and licensed word 2016 and then re-installed endnote und updated it to 7.5, everything is working perfectly fine now.

Thanks a lot!

I tried the approach you mentioned. Even though  EndNote 7 appears on the top of the Word 20167 “ribbon”, and even though I can go to EndNote and open my reference loibrary, I cannot make it to insert a selected reference in the text. Also, none of the styles appear. I am using El Capitan for the Mac and working with Word 2016. Which OS are you using? Was your experience described below done in a El Capitan OS?

The Word 15.20 works seamlessly with EndNote 7.5.1.1 in ElCapitain. All I was getting previously were crashes and crashes…It actually works. I had to downgrade with the last 15.19 to Word 2011.  I think the problem is (puttting out product too early) is solved.

I have an end-user on a Mac OS-X 10.9.5, Word 2011 and EndNote X7.  Word crashes constantly as soon as the end-user tries to insert a note from the EndNote ribbon in Word.  I have tried to completely uninstall Office 2011 (including pref settings, etc) and reinstall, run all updates available for Office 2011 and Endnote X7, but the crashing issue remains.

Is Office 2016 now working with EndNote X7?  Would this combination work on OS-X 10.9.5 though?  We cannot update her OS-X to El Capitan because of Parallels Vm software requiring $$$ to update to a compatible version for El Capitan.  Feels like a case of damned if you do, damned if you don’t!

Any help appreciated.  Thanks.

Word 2016 works fine with the latest EndNote, and I don’t believe that either depends upon having El Capitan. El Capitan was pretty much an elective update from Yosemite, with new features but nothing critical, certainly not so far as Microsoft Word and End Note were concerned. The big problem was with Word 2016 not working with the old EndNote, and some Word users had to go to Word 2016. I ran Word 2016 itself without any difficulty on Yosemite, but of course I didn’t have the new compatible End Note until I had updated to El Capitan.

Someone here will correct me if I’m wrong.

Looks like Office 2016 on a Mac requires a minimum of OS-X 10.10, so it won’t work on 10.9.5 anyway

Oops. Sorry. I guess I didn’t realize that Word 2016 wouldn’t work on Mavericks. Then I guess you have to upgrade to 10.10 or 10.11 (both free), but will have to upgrade Parallels, which certainly isn’t free.

I just went from Word 2011 to Word 2016.  Currently I am running Endnote X6.  My understanding is that I will need to upgrade to 7.5 for the CWYW toobar and feature to work, correct?  Until that time, can I still add citations to my document?  I attempted to do this by selecting the appropriate citation and using a cut-and-paste function.  The correct citation appeared, but it is not formatted.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

At this time, only EndNote X7 is compatible with Word 2016 for Mac. You would have to purchase an upgrade from X6 to X7 for compatibility. You can use the Format Paper feature of EndNote X6 with Word 2016 for Mac. Please see this article:

I now have Endnote X7 installed.  But I don’t see the CWYW toolbar.  Do I need a plug-in of some kind?

Word is periodically updated (monthly).  Every time this happens, Endnote’s plug in breaks.  Thomson Reuters apparently has no prior knowledge of when these updates will happen, but they seem to always break CWYW.

There is no way to check whether the latest update is compatible, or when the update that will fix it will come from Endnote.

It has become an untenable situation, and we are searching for alternatives at our University at this point.

The current version of Word (15.25) does not work with the current version of Endnote (7.5.3).

You would think large software companies would have some mechanism of talking to each other about such things, but apparently TR doesn’t have the clout to do so.

Anyone from Tech Support/Software Dev. care to comment on this mess?

Hello @wolfneuralnet,

You can see my post here on version 15.25 of Word 2016: http://community.thomsonreuters.com/t5/EndNote-General/Attention-X7-Mac-and-Microsoft-Office-Insiders-Word-version-15/td-p/130285

As an Office Insider participating in the Fast Channel, you would have received this early build of Word 2016 version 15.25. The EndNote team has been working on an X7.6 update for Mac that will be fully compatible with this 64-bit version of MS Word 2016.  But, for Office Insiders impacted right now, we have a 64-bit X7 Mac Cite While You Write beta plug in available – and you can go to http://endnote.com/betasignup to get it. You will see that Microsoft has called out EndNote and CWYW in their blog post on Office’s transition to 64-bit here: https://dev.office.com/mac-office-64-bit-transition

The EndNote team is very concerned with interruptions in functionality and we work hard to make sure that our users can continue their research and writing without pause. I apologize for this inconvenience and hope you will find our beta helps get you back to your work.

Thank you,

Meredith M.

If you are not an Office Insider, something else might be going on. In which case, please contact the EndNote Support team: http://endnote.com/support

Thanks!

If the EndNote X7 tools are installed in Word 2016, it will appear as a tab in the ribbon. Please see this article if the EndNote X7 tab is not appearing:

Right now I am running Word 15.23.  Does this mean I should avoid updating to 15.25?
