EndNote for Word 2016 for Mac.

The EN beta works fine at least from what I see. But also, there is little or no new functionality in these recent WOrd updates. So no loss if you don’t update.

Alternatively, as a Microsoft Insider participant with the 64-bit beta CWYW I can be somewhat confident of avoiding an unexpected interruption to my workflow.

good job my bro

Hi Meredith/Jason,

Thanks for responding to this so quickly.  I appreciate that after the debacle of Word 2016 there appears to now be some communication lines open between the companies.

Thanks for the note about the beta.  Unfortunately it doesn’t fix any of the major bugs we have reported, but I am glad to hear it is 64-bit compatible now, and will work with the 64-bit version of Word!  I will report the bugs again (again) as part of the beta, and maybe they can be addressed.

I didn’t realize this issue had arisen from the “insider” checkbox that is under the update tab - I don’t expect that you have updated software on your end for things are not even fully rolled out from MS.

Take care,

John

Yet another useless “Troubleshooting guide” from Thomson Reuters.

The message I receive is: “Your add-in isn’t compatible with this version of Word. Please contact the add-in provider for an update. (EndNote CWYW Word 2016.bundle)”

If the EndNote X7 tools are installed in Word 2016, it will appear as a tab in the ribbon. Please see this article if the EndNote X7 tab is not appearing:

Hello Carlos,

Those of you using the production version of Word 2016 version 15.23 can refer to the instructions in our knowledge-base article http://endnote.com/kb/138936 to install the tools. If you are receiving a message about an incompatible add-in, it is likely you have installed the Office Insider Update from Microsoft. You can check the version by going to the Word menu and selecting About Word. If this reads 15.25, you have the Preview edition of Microsoft Word 2016. More information on the Office Insider Program can be found here:

https://products.office.com/en-us/office-insider#Mac-section

Microsoft is transitioning to a 64-bit version of Word. Because of that, we have developed a Beta EndNote X7 that is compatible with that 64-bit Preview Insider Edition of Word 2016. More information about this transition from Microsoft and a link to sign up for our Beta Program can be found on this page:

https://dev.office.com/mac-office-64-bit-transition

I hope this helps, but please let us know if you have any additional questions.

Jason,

I’m on the “slow” Microsoft updates, and now have Word 15.24, not 15.25. With 15.24, the regular EndNote won’t load, and the beta EN version will load and appears to work normally within Word, but always gives the “Compile error in hidden module: MacIpcClient” box first, which I have to “OK” out of before EN loads. Just a minor glitch, I think, although I haven’t had time to  Maybe if I go to the fast beta update and try to get 15.25. that will eliminate it.

Just for your information. Should I be posting this elsewhere?

Ken

Hello Ken,

Thank you for the information. The EndNote X7.6 Beta was designed to support the full 64-bit version of Word 2016 15.25. If you update Word and continue to experience that issue, please let us know. When you signed up for the Beta, you would have received a Welcome to the Beta Testing Program email with a link to the Private Forum and the Beta coordinator email address.

Thank you for your information.

Me too!! Please an update!

I was able to finally solve this by:

(1) Updating to the latest version

(2) BUT NOT CHECKING THE OPTION FOR OFFICE INSIDER, both slow and fast. If you have already checked slow, uncheck it then check for updates. It will show you an update (which is actually a downgrade), and update your version.
(3) Quit word, then open.

I’ve found that this has finally worked for me. I’m using Word for Mac 2016, and Endnote X7.5.3

Hope that helps!

Jason

I did register and download the Beta, just installed and updated the Beta to X7b2a, still getting the “Compile error in hidden module: link” error in MS Word - and cannot find my Beta Private Forum access details (oops)!

Hello Tim,

Our Beta Coordinator has responded to the post you sent to the Beta Testing Forum.

Hello Jason,

My original Microsoft Word 2016 Version 15.16 does not work with Endnote X7.5.3 (Bld 11252)

I installed updates to the Microsoft Word 2016 Version 15.24 and it still does not work with Endnote X7.5.3 (Bld 11252).

I get the following error message:

Word was unable to load an add-in

Your add-in isn’t compatible with this version of Word.

Please contact the add-in provider for an update.

(Endnote CWYW Word 2016.bundle)

When I check Endnote for updates it says i am using the most current update of Endnote X7.

Please confirm if it us trye that my Microsoft Word 2016 Version 15.24 is a 32-bit version and cannot work with the Endnote X7.5.3 (Bld 11252) which is built for 64-bit.

If so, please advise on a way forward.

Thank you.

Dave

Hello Dave,

There are two versions of Word 2016 version 15.24. One is 32-bit and one is 64-bit. In Word, click on the Word menu and select About Word. If you see “15.24 (160709),” you have the 32-bit verison. If you see (160607), that is the 64-bit version, which would require the Beta to work with EndNote.

In Word, click on the Tools menu and select Templates and Add-ins. See if “LinkCreation.dotm” is listed under Global Templates and Add-ins. If so, this can conflict with the EndNote tools loading. To remove this file, first Quit Word. Click on the Go menu of your Finder and then press the “Option” key on your keyboard. Library should then appear as an option in the Go menu. Click this and browse to “Group Containers : UBF8T346G9.Office : User Content : Startup : Word.” Move the “LinkCreation.dotm” file out of this folder. You can then start Word 2016 to use the EndNote tools.

Thanks for the assistance Jason.

I had the version 15.24 (160709) and I tried the solution you gave but could not find the LinkCreation.dotm file.

I finally had to downgrade my MS Word to 15.23 (160611). Now my EndNote works well.

Regards,

Dave

Just heared that Office for Mac 15.25 (the 64-bit version) will be released on Monday 22-8-2016. When will Endnote 7.x will compatible with this version?

Dear Jason,

This morning I heard that the 64-bit Office for Mac 15.24 will be released on Monday 22-8-2016. Any news on the release date for Endnote X7.6?

We’d like to update ASAP to Office 15.25, therefor we need Endnote to be compatible.

I’d like to have tested the beta, but since we have a Volume license that was not possible.

Regards,

Jako
