I have purchased Endnote desktop for PC to help with writing my MC but have never used the product before and there are no local classes within the UK so hopefully some experianced users can impart some knowledge to clarify my quiries on using the product.
Currently I access documents within my OneDrive cloud based folder from both iMac and PC and currently items are filed within subject folders.
Q - When setting up my 1st Endnote reference library should this be on my PC, then Endnote cloud, then my iMac can access the files?
Q - Will Endnote be a duplicate database of my folders stored within my OneDrive cloud account? if so can it sync with OneDrive so when I add new files they appear in both Endnote and OneDrive?
Q - Are there any file restrictions for Endnote like ppt, mind maps, etc
Q - Can endnote store screen shots, web pages, etc like Devonthink for future referencing
As a PC only user - I can only address some of your questions. I would recommend that you go to the www.endnote.com training menu and join one or more Webinars where you can learn the basics and ask questions.
But in answer to the two questions below,
Q - Are there any file restrictions for Endnote like ppt, mind maps, etc
you can include any file type, but it may not be viewable in endnote. You can attach multiple attachments to each record.
Q - Can endnote store screen shots, web pages, etc like Devonthink for future referencing
You can also attach screen shots, but you would have to creat them and drag and drop them to the record. I am not familiar with Devonthink, but I do use Evernote and Endnote is not a replacement.
You would want to explore the different reference types and may have to create a reference template for individual publications, so the reference would be correct for the publisher in question for some of the reference types.
Thanks. I posted this some time ago and things have developed since as follows:
Q - When setting up my 1st Endnote reference library should this be on my PC, then Endnote cloud, then my iMac can access the files?
A - I updated my references / citations on one device - synced to Endnote Online Cloud - then connect each local device with Endnote Endnote Online, enabling sync / replication of a centralised database across all my devices.
Q - Will Endnote be a duplicate database of my folders stored within my OneDrive cloud account? if so can it sync with OneDrive so when I add new files they appear in both Endnote and OneDrive?
A - Yes it would be a duplicate and auto syncing between documents was not possible. Storage of each citations attachment in EndNote is possible to reduce duplication but it’s limited by EndNote Online Cloud storage capacity. So if you have a large library may not be possible. An alternative method for each local EndNote library is to ‘Point’ to its associated file but this is a manual process and not automatically transferable between devices. This means lots of additional time. For example manual link / point 1000 EndNote references to 1000 local device files x three devices = 3000 MANUAL tasks. Once linked the local files need setting in a template folder (recommended) because if moved the reference / document link will break so you won’t be able to locate the file. So considering these points I have not completed the linking process and decided to focus on developing a stable Document Management System (DMS) that maximises my workflow ( an ongoing process ).
Q - Are there any file restrictions for Endnote like ppt, mind maps, etc
A - Everything is in my DMS so it’s not a problem.
Q - Can endnote store screen shots, web pages, etc like Devonthink for future referencing
A - As previous everything is in my DMS so this is not a problem.
At the time I wanted EndNote to operate as my DMS buts it’s not possible due to previous points. Increasing EndNote online storage size would be beneficial (like most cloud storage plans). Allowing automatic indexing of linked references / documents on local devices and being able to transfer this between local device libraries through EndNote Online would help to aliviate opportunity cost of time involved in manually linking between devices. Although they may have more staff resources I don’t imagine this is practical for large databases like libraries, companies DMS, publishing companies, research organisations, etc.
