Before I begin I would like to give you my system specification:
Windows 7 Home Premium (Service Pack 1)
Intel Core i5-2430M CPU @ 2.40GHZ 2.4GHZ
RAM 6GB
64-bit OS
MS Office 64-bit
Endnote x 5.0.1 (Build 5774)
The problem:
Everything works except one thing. MS Word crashes when I right click on a citation and attempt to edit the citation. When I choose an alternative style, Word immediately crashes. However, I have no problem changing the style by going to the ribbon >Endnote X5 tab > Edit & Manage Citations.
Edit citation means, for example, changing (Robinson, 2012) to Robinson (2012), etc.
I would appreciate a fix for this as it is very inconvenient to do it the other way that I mentioned. I have attempted repairing the Endnote installation, but it did not fix anything. Reinstalling Office would be a real hassle. This seems like and Endnote bug.
As a test, please create a new blank Word document. With the new document open, try inserting a citation and then look to see if you experience the same crashing behavior by right clicking the citation to customize it with the Edit Citation(s) menu.
If the problem persists within this new document, you may want to try resetting your EndNote preferences. The following knowledge base article will walk you through that process-
If you’re able to edit the citation properly within this new document, the issue may be related to corrupted field codes in your original Word document. In this case, the following knowledge base article will walk you through cleaning up the field codes within the text of your problematic document-

I’m glad to hear resetting EndNote’s preferences has resolved the crashing behavior that you had been encountering. It’s hard to pinpoint the cause of such corruption. It may have to do with the order in which software had installed on your machine. Alternatively, there may have been a glitch when EndNote was writing to the registry which caused one of EndNote’s registry keys to become corrupted.
