Online Sync Library

HOPEFULLY somebody is working on this, its been a couple of months now!
I opened a ticket with Thomson Reuters and they responded:
“While reviewing your EndNote online account setup, I have noticed that there were errors in the timestamps. I have corrected the timestamps for your account. You should now be able to perform sync.”
and yes, it appears to be working again. And yes, I have been using 7.02 before. So whatever created error in the timestamps was the culprit this time and the solution is apparently simple.
The Endnote X7.1 in my MacAir has this problem all the time. It is insteresting that win version is working fine. My total reference reached 600 now. I’m afraid Endnote is reliable to handle large amount of reference.
Syn function quite often does not pick up small changes, such as folder name change, small changes in “notes”.
Today, the Endnote Mac gave me an internal error during syn syaing
“Server.DBException.internalError: user has not been assigned to a shard”
It doesn’t really work on the PC either. The only solution I have found is to use the procedure to reset you local library, then delete everything off the web library (except shared groups). And finally to resync. TR even has a document telling you how to do this because so many have asked.
This is tedious, especially considering my library is over 7000 references. For me it takes at least a solid day to resync everything, sometimes more. So my solution is that I backup the library (creating a compressed enlx file) everytime I make a change and keep about a months worth on my D: drive (each file is about 1.5gb), afterwards I move these to a backup area and finally to an archive USB drive (2TB each drive).
This is probably the worst PR that this company can get. I have ranted to them, complained to them, made suggestions on improvements. I have spoken to developers, trainers, helpdesk personnel, and my local librarian (who is the coordinator of our “site” license). I have done this all over the past several years (5 or so), to absolutely NO avail.
I have converted my library to Zotero, but am not as happy with the product. I have been forced back into using EndNote because of my job (I was asked to take care of the publications for a new grant and each member was using endnote and they had developed an output style that was compliant with the grant specs).
I was told this was solved in version 7.1, but it wasn’t. Not only that but TR is dragging its’ feet in adopting practices that will make it useful. EVERYONE in every institution that applies for NIH funding MUST have all of their publications compliant with the NIH public access policy, yet this came as a surprise to everyone at TR when I spoke to them. Why would anyone use the product if it is not meeting their needs???
The problem still exist with a vengeance.
I had the sync error on my Mac and tried the reset solution provided by tech support which not only failed to recognise my account but crashed the package on my Mac since then it crashes every time I try to open a PDFs or insert a reference. If I delete all the libary data it works until the first time I shut it down and reopen in. The only way I’ve been able to work around the problem is by installing a trial version of the software, that runs perfectly, except I can’t register it, as soon as I try it crashes. If I uninstall the trial version and reinstall a new version and register at the installation phase it works perfectly until the first time I shut it down and reopen it.
Ipad is useless now because as soon as I try to use sync it returns a error that the user hasn’t been assigned a shard.
The laptop still works but I’m not game to use my main database in case that falls over and I’m left with nothing that works after the trial version expires on my main computer.
Tech support …well what can I say, has been utterly useless. This problem has been going on now for three weeks and Im basically stuffed in a week when my trial version expires.
THIS IS COMPLETLY UNACCEPTABLE, how hard can it be to resolve this problem, it’s been ongoing for a year now. At least give ipad full Dropbox support so we can have some means of syncing that actually works.
7.2 has the same issue plus it doesn’t resize properly, I have to drag it in and out in about 20 steps to resize. So far the only version that works is 7.1 in its trial form. As soon as I register it the problems return.
