is there any way in Endnote X4 to hide (or at least reorder) fields while creating new entries? I know how to hide reference types but I think it is very inefficent to have to scroll through all these rarely used input fields to find what you actually need to enter. The preferences, under Reference types, explicitly states that manipulating these options “cannot be used to reorder the fields in a reference window.”
I have the hunch that this might be a frequently asked questions, but I couldn’t find anything neither in these forums, nor in the knowledgebase.
Thanks for any hints in advance,
Philipp
PS: I know the toggle empty fields function, but this (obviously) can’t be used for new entries.
Reordering is not possible - (see short discussion here and the link therein) the only way to hide them is a permanant “fix” which would be to modify the ref type and remove that field name.

This is done by going to the Edit menu (or EndNote menu on the Mac) and selecting Preferences. From here, go to the Reference Types option. You can make a backup of your current settings by using the Export feature here and save the xml file to your computer. To edit the Reference Types, click on Modify Reference Types. For each applicable Reference Type, you can remove the field label on the right to prevent that field from appearing when you create new entries.
