How to show grey colour on citation with Word 2010

H

I know this is not exactly related to EndNote but Word 2010 but I have been unable to resolve this. When I was using Word XP, all citation were in and I can eyeball them easily but now with Word 2010 and EndNote X4, citation does not grey out anymore. I tried all sort of things including the obvious (option…advance…field shading… always or when selected, none of these options show the citation in grey, they seem only have effects on the reference/bibliography).

Can anyone help please? I used to have this feature and I typed some citations out manually while using EndNote for others. I now need to sieve out those that I type manually and replace them with proper EndNote citations. As I cannot see the grey colour anymore, it is real pain trying to find them…

Many thanks.

“…I typed out citations manually while using EndNote for others” seems a bit odd or at least an under-usage of EndNote.

But assuming the gray-colorized citation format  is your preferred style of working, you could create a new style in MS Word. Then it would be a matter of selecting the text (citation) then applying the style which would then shade it gray.

To achieve the visualization you want, you just need to have MSWord’s options (in 2003, it is under View, Options, not sure where it is under later versions)  and for Field shading settings, under view, change the default “When select” to  “always”.

Well, I didn’t have the full reference then but only the authors and year, so I just did that …

Applying style is a way but not now as the problem I have is to find out where I need to apply this style. By eyeballing the document (200+ pages) is a bit difficult…

Well, this is what I was trying to say - it does not work… It works in Word XP but not Word 2010 which is what I have.  What I mean is no matter which I choose (always or when selected), the citation just does not have the grey colour. I am not sure if there is a bug in Word 2010 or what, and that’s why I am asking if anyone has this experience…

Field shading in Word 2010:

File → Options → Advanced → Show Document Content → Change Field shading from “When selected” to “Always”. → OK

I have a Norwegian Word so hopefully I got the English meny names correctly.

Best wishes

I know exactly what you mean. I am having the same issue. I have tried both “when selected” and “always” but there are some references that do not turn grey no matter which setting is selected. It’s very frustrating. It’s as if they dont have the field, however when i right click, one of the options is “update field” so they obviously are. Sorry I dont have a solution (I wish I did) but I guess the best way to tell if they are endnote or not is to right click.
