we are working with Endnote X.3, Windows XP, and Word 2003. A serious problem occoured since some in-text endnote citations are not detected by endnote anymore. The text (e.g. [11]) is still there und also turned grey. But exporting a travelling library is not possible anymore and when inspecting the reference with right mouse click / edit citations / more an error message shows up (see file attached). How to solve this problem? Is it possible that there is interaction with Refman, which also is installed on some of our computers?
The citations may have been inserted into the document with an application other than EndNote. To determine this, you can set Word 2003 to display the field codes:
In Word, go to the “Tools” menu, and select “Options”.
2, Here, on the “View” tab, uncheck the box named “Field Codes”.
Click “OK”.
The document should now appear with the field codes displayed.
If the citations were entered using EndNote, the field codes displayed should appear like this:
{ ADDIN EN.CITE <EndNote><Cite><Year>…
If the citations were entered using Reference Manager, the field codes displayed should appear like this:
{ ADDIN REFMGR.CITE <Refman><Cite><Year>…
If another application was used to insert the citation, you should be able to tell from the field codes as well. EndNote Would not be able to edit or export citations entered by Reference Manager or another application and would return a message such as the one you attached. To turn off the Field Code display in Word, you can do the following:
In Word, go to the “Tools” menu, and select “Options”.
2, Here, on the “View” tab, uncheck the box named “Field Codes”.
Click “OK”.
The document should now appear normal.
Also, be sure you have the correct and most up to date versions of the Cite While You Write (CWYW) tools installed for both EndNote and Reference Manager.
