I prefer to manually format the Bibliography after I finish the writing, and I believe many users do not like the “instant formatting” function is defaulted to be “on”. Although we can switch it off, but if it is off by default, it will be better.
I also found once the Bibliography has been formatted, if Idelete a paragraph (contains citations) in the document, even I use the “Update Citations and Bibliography” command, the citations which should be deleted still exists in the Bibliography.
If I convert to “unformatted Bibliography” first, then use the “Update Citations and Bibliography” command, it will work correctly. So, keep the “instant formatting” on is also error-prone.
You can turn it off for all new documents in the preferences settings on the endnote ribbon in Word. See attached for how. It doesn’t help in existing documents - but it is a time saver going forward.
But you can also turn off autoformating on each existing document one by one, and that will “stick” going forward too.

I find that this sometimes happens, if I have tracked changes on. Once changes are accepted I think this “feature” goes away. Otherwise, I don’t see this.
