Need to cite the same person as both the translator AND the editor in APA 6th

For the life of me, I can’t figure out how to handle this citation (and it shouldn’t be that hard). Specifically, I need to citePavlov’s famous experiment on classical conditioning. The book was translated and edited by G.V. Anrep. In addition,EndNote leaves out a comma when I add Anrep as the translator; the citation appears as:

Pavlov, I. P. (1927). Conditioned reflexes: An investigation of the physiological activity of the cerebral cortex (G. V. AnrepTrans.). London: Oxford University Press.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Which reference type template are you using to capture the information?  If you’re logging the entry as a “Book”, the reason why the editor’s name doesn’t appear is because the “Editor” field is not included in the bibliography output style template - so the template will need to be manually adjusted.

However, since you indicated G. V. Anrep is the editor, shouldn’t the info be logged instead as a “Book Section”  in which case you’ll also need the title of the edited book? Does the edited book contain separate chapters written by different authors - if so, the entry should be logged as a “Book Section” reference type, not “Book”.

I’m using the book template for APA 6th. Right now, I have G. V. Anrep listed as the translator.

How is the format for citing G. V. Anrep as both translator and editor supposed to appear in the bibliography? Is it something like below:

Pavlov, I. P. (1927). Conditioned reflexes: An investigation of the physiological activity of the cerebral cortex (G. V. AnrepTrans. & Ed.). London: Oxford University Press.

If the editorship should appear within the parentheses, the tricky part will be to have the entry display that info (e.g., “& Ed.”) just for this or similarly situated references where both translator and editor is the same person.  A workaround might be to employ a custom field in the reference type template where you would enter “& Ed.” (or whatever desired wording)  then add the field to the APA 6th bibliography template. The “& Ed.” will then appear in the bibliography only when the field in the reference type template contains that info.

**Post-Addendum**

To illustrate, the process involves:

  1. Modifying the Book reference template to include a custom field (see Image1 - which names the field “Additional Info”);

  2. Modifying the bibliography template of the APA output style to incorporate the “Additional Info” custom field (see Image2); and

  3. Entering the “& Ed.” info into the “Additional Info” field in the Book reference type template (see Image2). The result is shown in the library’s Preview window.

In case it’s useful, EndNote X5 has a new setting in the Bibliography Field Substitions section to define specific formatting when the editor and translator are the same.

Thanks, this worked great. “Additional Info” doesnt seem to exist anymore, but any field would do. I used “Notes”.
