Retain Text while remove grey background

Thanks to this site I was able to learn how to remove the grey background.But, in doing so it also removed all the text that was in the grey area. How do I retain this?  The document was built in layers, so if i hover over it i can see that the text is still there but it is hidden. All the text that had a white field/box ect next to it remained on the page. Any help would be appreciated!

Could you describe what you did to remove the gray background? Also, are you using a Mac/PC and what version of Endnote and MS Word are you running?

I too wonder how you removed them.  In Windows Word, the setting to either only show fields when you the cursor is on or in them, or always, is in the advanced options, as shown in the attached image.
