Unformmatted citation and unable to switch to formatted one

I am using EndNote X9, Windows 10, Word 2016. My citations stay unformatted despite of whatever I do. Normally, my EN change from unformatted to formatted when I updated Citations and Bibliography. However, it seems not to work these days. I turned off instant formatting, but EndNote simply removed hyperlink to the library. Same thing happened when I converted to plain text. I recovered my libraby but it did not solve the problem.

Can you please let me know what to do here?

What do the citations look like?  Have you accidentally changed the temporary citation delimiters so they don’t match what is in your document?  

{Author, year #recno; author2, year #recno}  or accession or title in place of the #recno

or maybe square brackets?
