Please could someone tell me what is going on?! :cry:
I downloaded an EndNote style file for a specific journal and noticed it’s out of date, so I made some amends.
This is the problem:
When I go to my manuscript in Word and click on “Update Citations and Bibliography”, the majority of references get deleted from the bibliography. I am left with 7 references instead of 21.
Please can someone point me in the right direction…
When you modify an output style the changes are saved to a new file having the word “Copy” (e.g., APA 6th becomes “APA 6th Copy”). So did you adjust both EndNote and MS Word to use the new output style file or were both programs using the old file or another style?
I dont think that is the issue because when I download the original EndNote style for a journal, I always keep the original file as it is. I immediately duplicate the file name and amend the file name (by putting my initials after it), and then I double-click and open the file with the amended name, and start working on it.
What else would you suggest, since I noticed that beneath your name it says “Master Guru” lol
I don’t see in your workflow where you have changed the Output style in the Word document to use the newly updated output style you saved? What do you see if you “unformat” the citations (NOT Convert to Plain text). Are the original references “cited” in the text in curly brackets?

Sorry about that - I didnt want to go into much detail. When I go to Word, I have made sure that it’s the correct output style because I usually give my updated style an unusual name (so that I can distinguish it)
I think the problem might be a corrupt endnote library or something
I’m not sure what you mean with regards to unformatting the citations. I will have a play around, and see what happens…
With a copy of the document, try the command “Convert Citations and Bibliography > Convert to Unformatted Citations.” This will remove the reference list and convert all the in-text citations to a temporary state where you will see curly braces surrounding the author, year and record number. They should appear like the following:
{Argus, 1993 #15}
If some of the citations do not appear in that state after unformatting, that will give us more information. If they all unformat, click the “Update Citations and Bibliography” command. If you get the “Select Matching Reference” dialog, see the following article for more information:
Jason’s answer was the closest - In the end, and after a lot of investigative work, I found out that it had to do with the fact that almost all of the citations in Word weren’t linked to the specific reference in EndNote.
