Do you run a university licence or something familiar?
The only file is “Endnote CWYW commands.dot”
And yes, it’s a university license.

Well, so it seems we have a problem with that kind of licence until someone with a university licence could confirm that it’s running.
GUYS - I have exactly the same problem. I also know two other guys with the same problem (one of them has a regular licence)… I think there is a serious problem with the update!!!
When you go to “Tools > Templates and Add-ins” if you do not have the file “Endnote CWYW Word 2008.bundle” listed, try the following:
-
Close Word and EndNote
-
Open your hard drive and go to “/Applications/EndNote X1/Cite While You Write”
-
Single click on “EndNote CWYW Word 2008.bundle” and go to “Edit > Copy”
-
Go to the folder “/Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/Startup/Word” and paste the file, “Edit > Paste”
-
Start EndNote and then start Word

Here are some steps you can try which work for me:
- Close Word and browse to the startup folder: “Microsoft Office 2008 > Office > Startup > Word”
2. Delete EndNote CWYW Word 2008.bundle
-
Open Word
-
Click on the Tools menu and select Templates and Addins.
-
Highlight each EndNote file listed and click Remove
-
Click OK
-
Close and re-open Word to confirm nothing is listed under Tools > Templates and Addins before closing Word again
-
Copy the EndNote CWYW Word 2008.bundle from “Applications > EndNote X1 > Cite While You Write” to “Microsoft Office 2008 > Office > Startup > Word”
-
Make sure your EndNote library is open
-
Launch Word
-
Try using the tools
These three items should now be listed under Global Templates and Addins if the commands are working:
EndNote CWYW Commands.dot (checked)
EndNote Web CWYW Commands.dot (unchecked)
EndNote CWYW Word 2008.bundle (checked)

Doing your steps, Jason, nothing appears in the addins list now.
Indeed, before, just “EndNote CWYW Commands.dot” appeared in that list. There was never before the “EndNote CWYW Word 2008.bundle” in the list, equal what I did.

Same answer for me… It remains empty.
Same result in my case. I tried the instructions of both of you - absolutely no changes!!!
Here is what I would suggest, close Word and browse to this folder on your system:
Users:[your login name with the house icon]:Library:Application Support:EndNote
In addition to other files, you should have “EndNote CWYW Command.dot” and “EndNote Web CWYW Command.dot” here. If not, copy these two files from the Applications > EndNote X1 > Cite While You Write folder to that folder.
Now open Word. If the tools are still not present, click on the Word menu and select Preferences. Click on File Locations and highlight Startup. Click on Modify and set this to the Word 2008 startup folder which typically is “Microsoft Office 2008 > Office > Startup > Word.” Click Choose and then OK. Close Word and re-open it to see if the tools are now present.

Hey Jason: No positive result in my case. It still looks like this: When I open WORD - there is no sign that ENDNOTE is installed. After I add the command.dot the toolbar appears. However, by clicking on any of these buttoms - nothing happens. I know my colleague has exactly the same problem - and it seems that other users as well…
THAT WORKED! My startup folder was not present in the word preferences. So maybe that was the only problem.
Now I can uninstall Bookends
Thanks!

YES ! That worked for me too !
Perhaps a false way towards the startup folder, that’s what really unlocked Endnote !
Thanks a lot !
I am not even getting to the point of having this problem because I can’t get CWYW to install at all. It tells me Word 2008 is running even though it isn’t. I’ve tried restarting a number of times and re-downloading CWYW, but the newer version also tells me Word 2008 is running. I’ve tried this running NO programs other than the installer.
No changes in my case: Could anybody please write me in WHICH FOLDER THE “ENDNOTE CWYW command.dot” which you have to activate in word2008 is?
Ok - I see the problem. Now you have added the info that the Office 2008 has to be installed. I heard so far many negative things about stability with the Service pack, that I resisted to install…
First you should try to figure out if there is a startup folder in your preferences in word. Go to Word preferences → file loacations. If there is no folder mentioned right to the Startup click on left, click on choose and got to:
Microsoft Office 2008 > Office > Startup > Word
There should be only the file with .bundle at the end. Close Word and open.
If that does not work, got to:
Users:[your login name with the house icon]:Library:Application Support:EndNote
and put “EndNote CWYW Command.dot” and “EndNote Web CWYW Command.dot” in tht folder. Now reopen word again.
Should work.
I still have the same problem: the CWYW installer says Word is running when it isn’t. I have added the startup folder you described, but there is no .bundle file at Microsoft Office 2008 > Office > Startup > Word. There are no files at all there now that I have deleted PDFmaker.dot. Library:Application Support:EndNote does have both “EndNote CWYW Commands.dot” and “EndNote Web CWYW Commands.dot”
This should contain all of the steps from the various messages:

If after installing the Word 2008 SP1 update and the EndNote X1 2008 update the tools still do not appear:
1) Close Word and EndNote
2) Open your hard drive and go to Applications:EndNote X1:Cite While You Write
3) Copy the files "EndNote CWYW Command.dot" and "EndNote Web CWYW Command.dot" by highlighting them and going to "Edit > Copy"
4) Go to the folder Users:[your login name with the house icon]:Library:Application Support:EndNote and paste the two files, "Edit > Paste"
5) Go back to the folder Applications:EndNote X1:Cite While You Write
6) Copy the file "EndNote CWYW Word 2008.bundle" by highlighting the file and going to "Edit > Copy"
7) Go to the folder Applications:Microsoft Office 2008:Office:Startup:Word and paste the file, "Edit Paste"
8) Start Word, go to "Word > Preferences" and click on "File Locations"
9) If the Startup folder is not set, highlight "Startup" and click on "Modify". Select the folder Applications:Microsoft Office 2008:Office:Startup:Word and click "Choose"
10) Click "OK" and close Word
11) Start EndNote and then start Word

I’ve done the first 5 steps, but I can’t do 6, since the CWYW For Word.pkg won’t install at all, because it thinks Word 2008 is running. 6 requires “EndNote CWYW Word 2008.bundle” but I don’t have that file since I guess it is created by the installation, and my installer won’t work. Am I the only one with this problem?
