I’m new to this forum and to endnotes, which I only got yesterday. I am currently writing my PhD and want to create a bibliography for it. I am trying to get to the author parsing settings in order to get the name order right: could anybody help me? Also, I’m working in Japanese studies and would like to add the Chinese characters without they being counted as an additional name or surname.
Parsing from where? Or is it parsing them to an output you are interested in?
I should say that parsing oriental names can be difficult, as databases often get the order wrong.
If you want some outputs to reflect the oriental order (surname firstname) and others to reflect the English/European order Firstname Surname or Surname, Firstname (with the comma) you may find that you manually need to add a trailing comma to oriental names, so that Endnote will not invert them.
Thank you very much for your kind reply. By trial and error, I had sort of arrived at some result with the commas: does adding a comma have the function of not inverting?
I also have a couple of other questions:
Is it possible to have both name and surname appear in the database window?
With double surnames (e.g. von Verschuer, Ten Grotenhuis, Al Eid), do you have to link them with a hyphen so that they don’t get parsed wrong, or is there another possibility?
My thesis being written in French, is it possible to change “ed.” into “sous la dir.”?
Sorry I forgot one question in my previous mail: how do I get anonymous sources to appear in the alphabetical order with the rest of the references (they appear in no specific order at the top of my bibliography for the time being). I tried both options “leave author blank” and “use full title instead of author” under Anonymous works, but nothing happened.
Yes, when you put a comma at the end, endnote assumes the whole thing is a “surname” or organization, and it leaves it as is.
With a double barrel name (or any “european-like name”) it is best to always enter the authorname as Surname, Firstname. So von Verschuer, first name and then a carriage return and the next author.
The French form of Editor to use in an output style, means changing the output style template you are using to format the bibliography. You may need to play around with it a bit, and insert “link adjacent” symbols between the words there, sousladir. I suggest you look at one of the endnote tutorials on editing an output style. is there a difference in the French version, if you have singular vs multiple editors (in English, ed. or eds. which is achieved by ed.^eds.)
If you get a style close to what you want, but not exactly, you can attach it to a reply - and one of us can try tweaking it for you. (an edited file is probably located in your My Documents/Endnote/Styles folder – save as -to a new name to distinguish it from the original.).
Thank you very much for your precise answer. I’ll try around a little bit and come back to you in a while if I still have problems! May I ask you to answer my other post about how to treat anonymous sources? And is there a register of the “tricks” functions like the comma, or the asterisks as in “sous*la*dir.”?
The order depends on the sort order of the references. Right now, I don’t know what style you are using, but it is likely to sort as Author, title or Author, Year. So if they are sorting to the top, the author is empty so it comes before A, then they would be sorted at the top, perhaps by year? The sort is in the bibliography template settings. Do you want them sorted by title? (and it might then ignore the "stop words, like “The”, I am not sure).
Sorry I forgot one question in my previous mail: how do I get anonymous sources to appear in the alphabetical order with the rest of the references (they appear in no specific order at the top of my bibliography for the time being). I should clarify that the * is taking the place of the “link-adjacent” symbol that you insert from the “insert field” dropdown, when editing the output styles, bibliography templates. In my current version of Endnote, these and the singular plural tricks are all explained in under the help topic “Special Formatting Characters”
and what kind of Reference Types are assigned to the records with anonymous authors in library? (i.e. journal articles, books, book sections, newspaper articles, etc.)
