Cannot connect to the Library of Congress catalog via EndNote X4.

I cannot connect to the Library of Congress catalog via EndNote X4. I have updated the connection file to the latest one from the EndNote website, and I still receive the error “gave up waiting for host to respond”. I am able to connect to the Library of Congress catalog via Internet Explorer and do a search, but just can’t via EndNote X4.

  1. Have you upgraded X4 to X4.0.2 (see: http://www.endnote.com/support/ENX401_Win_updater.asp))

  2. Is your computer running any security software like a firewall?  If so, are you able to designate the LOC url as a “safe” site to prevent the firewall from blocking access?

  3. Also, have you tried accessing at different times and still been blocked? Are you able to connect to other databases without problem?

Yes, I am using the lateste upgrade EndNoteX4.0.2

I was able to do a search on the LOC connection from home at 1:30 A.M. PST., but I was not able to do one from my univerisity’s WiFi network in the library at around 5:30 P.M. PST and on.

Yes, my computer has a firewall, and I have added the EndNote X4 to it.

I’m not sure if the university’s system is what was keeping the connection from being made, or what. No at this point I have not tried making a connection at a different time at school. I would have to try when I am on campus next.

What else would you suggest?

You might retry connecting using the university’s WiFi network again to see if you are able to access LOC but if the problem persists, suggest notifying the library (i.e.,network administrator).
