Hello! I’m using a journal-specific style that I downloaded from the EndNote website. I loaded it into EndNote and saved it, and I double-checked that it shows up in the Style Manager. I also copied the style into C:/Program Files/EndNote #/Styles, so it’s definitely there.
But the new style isn’t showing up in the list of styles in Word 2016. I’ve checked “Select Another Style” about 100 times trying to get it to show up. I updated EndNote, closed EndNote and Word, tried a new Word doc, and restarted my computer, and nothing worked. I even tried with another random style from the EndNote website, and it didn’t work either.
Styles you download, should be saved from Endnote to a user accessible folder defined in the preferences. Also, the preferences defined folder should never be the same as the program installation folder. Moving or copying them to the program folder is not recommended, as they will be rewritten every time you update. Perhaps endnote is unable to view them, if it didn’t install them there, in the first place.
When they are saved to the preferences folder (by Endnote) you should see them in the list when you view all styles or open the styles manager. If they are not viewable, there is a problem that you should ask support about.
Importantly if there are two files of the same name in the installation styles folder and in the user defined styles folder, Endnote may also be confused, as to which one to use?
Hi together, after I lost hours of my life on exactly the same problem I think I found the solution.
Click on your EndNote Word Ribbon
Click in the EndNote Word Ribbon on “Preferences”
Then on the tab “Application”
And then change the checkbox from “EndNote online” to “EndNote”
I probably went through the settings when I tried to understand EndNote and thought I want to activate sync. But this way it was not syncing via the Desktop client but directly online and therefore also not displaying local stored files.

Your solution is great. It worked for me perfectly last time. (on a laptop with Windows 7) But on my new laptop with Windows 10 / EndNote X8 and Word 365 the solution doesn’t work anymore.
The problem is, that the checkbox from “EndNote online” to “EndNote” ist in the “applications” tab in is not active (the “applications”-tab is in the EndNote Word Ribbon on “Preferences”): The check box is only showing “EndNote online” and I can’t switch to “Endnote” anymore. Big problem for me. Any suggestions from the community?
I found the solution for the problem myself! (Worked on it 6-7 hours):
I installed a older version of the word plugin (which I had still in the download-folder of my “old” laptop) - and my own output style was recognized and works perfectly now!!!
Frist, You SHOULD NOT try to name the file the exact same name, but give it a slightly different meaningful name so you know what is changed and change the document to use the new named file.
If you still can’t save it (it keep adding the word copy to the name?) Also Check your preferences. You CAN NOT have the folder locations pointing to the installed styles folder in endnote’s program folder (it is write protected and you can’t save there when the program is open, at least in Windows). You should have the styles folder pointer to a user area.
This is for two reasons.
One is it is write protected as I said above.
Two, when you update a style in the installation styles folder version would be erased and updated with the new endnote versions during updates or upgrades.
