Not enjoying the flamewar here. (and I have NO affiliation with TR!) FYI – remember there is a free, less feature rich, version of EndNote too (see http://endnote.com/product-details/basic)) and even the max online storage compares favorably with Mendely (and there is no longer a max for online storage of the desktop paid version). But it still needs to work with Word 2016 – hopefully soon!

This is not a flamewar but a sober assessment of how honest TR has been about their release schedule. Everyone who isn’t on TR’s payroll is in agreement that TR has been dishonest. That’s not to say that it’s a “conspiracy” or “nefarious”: if TR could put out a working version of EndNote, then they would. The BS isn’t “nefarious” but rather corporate PR spin; hence, my allusion to the airline’s practice of taking a long delay and breaking it up into smaller ones. The difference here is that we’re not talking about a single trip but rather people working on months- and years-long research projects.
TR is acting in it’s own immediate self-interest rather than in the interest of its customers. I get it. But what they don’t appreciate is that if they were more upfront and honest, then they could build trust with their users who are then more likely to stick with EndNote.
@Steph007: Endnote X7 for Mac doesn’t work with Word 2016, period.
@Leanne: Your parting thought is precisely the disingenous PR spin that is infuriating: “But it still needs to work with Word 2016 – hopefully soon!”
--It isn’t happening soon and TR knows it. To recap: There is no working Beta version. When there is a semi-workable Beta version, then it’s possible to sincerely wish “hopefully soon” as in within a month. If I as an outsider know this, then TR employees also know. As for you not being affiliating with TR, Leanne, you have 5,700 posts on this forum: maybe you’ve spent too much time with the software to give a frank assessment?
Regardless of what biblio software you go with, I heartily implore everyone to call TR out on the false promises. As true in any industry, this is the only way to make a big business’s self-interest coincide with that of their customers. It is an insult to their customers’ (I was once one) to still list Sept/Oct as the release date when they know they aren’t going to make the date.
I am curious if I should be expecting a solution for the lack of compatibility between endnote X7 and MS Word 2016 before the end of the month. I know there are many irate customers over this issue, but I am using Word 2011 as a work around and while it is inconvienient it is adequate for my purposes. I am not interested in engaging in speculation, but I would like to know if TR’s timeline has changed. The only answer I get to my question through other avenues is “Thanks for reaching out and we appreciate your patience. We are working on it and will update customers as soon as possible.” I trust that TR is working on a solution, however, this does answer my queston. If there is someone monitoring this forum, would you please let mw know if the timeline has changed.
please get Endnote X7 integrated to Word 2016 for Mac! I paid for Endnote and I am not prepared to wait for ever until I can use a modern version of Word with it. Mendeley sounds appealing: free, and it works in Word 2016. Should I switch?
I am very dissapointed in the lackadaisical approach that Thomson Reuters has taken with this. I enjoy Endnote and have used it for many years. However, the lack of support coupled with the lack of communication to their customer base is surprising.
The preview of MS Office 2016 was released months ago. I enjoyed working with Endnote very much but the lack of compatibility for such a long time makes this citation software quite useless to me.
I am sorry to quit my work with Endnote but due to its missing progress I have to switch to an alternative (and btw free) citation software which was already mentioned above.
I hope Thompson Reuters will advance this software for the remaining users.
Yes, you should definitely change to Mendeley: free, fully integrated with MSW, respectful of their users. And they don’t have a Jason moderator always regurgitating the same PR B.s. to “justify” what is an outright abuse if not a robbery. Change now.
Five weeks after they first floated the idea of Beta testing coming “soon,” they now open a forum for enrolling people interested in a “soon” to be released Beta. Raise your hand if you believe anyone working for TR ever believed that EndNote was going to be released by Sept/Oct.
Zotero is also a great free option which I have used for years. Also free, great cloud database and sync functions, easy firefox integration and/or standalone , plus the added benefit of zero compatibility issues. I am working on my last paper before I start my own lab and my PI has yet to get away from Endnote, so I’m stuck writing on my mac and citing on my desktop pc until we publish the paper or Endnote releases their patch in Sept/Oct (isn’t it November?). Endnote is a joke… a very expensive joke, but still a joke. How can one program have so many issues?
Reading forum messages and discovering an update for Office 365 for Mac will not be available until next year was disturbing. If true, the company is failing to communicate with customers and it is undermining your integrity. You are becoming known among academics as an antiquated untrustworthy company that is no longer in tune with customer needs. I no longer recommend your EndNote X7 product to students and peers.
It comes down to trust. Can we trust you to support products and to communicate when problems which arise with creating needed updates, or is the company spiraling down into the abyss of mistrust. It appears, at a minimum, as a lack of concern for customers; the first step in a company’s downward trend. Customers are seriously passing on information on your website to switch to other software because you are failing to provide needed updates. Yet, there is no response from the company.
We are not asking for much, just an honest answer about the update so we can intelligently choose whether or not to retain the product. How about an honest answer—before the end of the year!

@hasan, this is for the Windows versions of End Note and Word, presumably, since you mention an exe file and because I can’t find anything corresponding to what you recommend in Mac, which is what i have.
