Endnote references not being added correctly Word

I’m using IEEE style In my word document, so the references are being diplayed with numbers inside brackets, such as: [14]

However, sometimes I’m working on a paper and when I try to insert a new reference, it shows up not as a number, but in the format, such as:  {Andersen, 2021 #36}. The Reference list at the bottom of my paper does not display this new reference I have added. The instant formating is already on and I’ve tried to update citations and bibliography, but nothing works.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Very strange.

Have you tried (make a copy first) to “convert to unformatted citations” (which is what you are seeing) and then “update citations and bibliography”?
