I just updated my endnote version from 9 to X6 (it has been a long time between Honours and PhD theses!). My system is Windows XP with Service Pack 3, so according to the software requirements this is fine for the X6 version. However after installation I found there’s no Endnote toolbar in word or any CWYW features at all. I Googled and found quite a few suggestions on how to rectify this for my specific X6/XP combo (namely ensuring that CWYW COM add-in is enabled, which it is), but then also discovered on the Endnote site that CWYW is not compatible with Windows XP…?
Could someone tell me if this is correct? I’m just confused about saying that XP has the system requirements for endnote X6 but consequently that the toolbar in word won’t appear and the CWYW feature won’t work (seems like there’s not much point to having endnote on your computer if these features are absent?), and the contrary fact that I’ve found so many sites claiming fixes to enable these features.
If CWYW is not compatible with Windows XP, which is the most recent version I can go back to to allow these features again with XP? Is it 9?
Thanks very much, any help would be much appreciated!
Per thesystem compatibility specs, EndNote X6 is compatible with Windows XP w/Service Pack 3. The issue of CWYW compatibility, according to the chart, relates to the version of MS Word (not Windows) that you’re using.
Thanks very much CrazyGecko. To confirm, I have Microsoft Office Professional 2010 (containing MS word). It appears this should be compatible with CWYW. So I guess I have some other problem somewhere. I’m currently sifting through help fora and Endnote/MS Word FAQs but if you have any other suggestions I’d be grateful.
In COM Add-ins, Endnote CWYW is checked and in Word Add-ins originally only Endnote Web Cwyw.dotm was checked (and this toolbar appears) but I’ve also now checked Endnote Cwyw.dotm. This has no effect on the features I can access (ie the Endnote X6 toolbar still does not appear) and if I close Word and open it again and go back into the Word Add-ins, I find Endnote Cwyw.dotm is simply unchecked again.
Per the EndNote CWYW FAQ 1 to install CWYW with EndNote X6 and MS Word 2010 (see below). Also note a patch was issued for X6 in Nov. 2012. If you’ve tried the instructions and running X6 with the patch but still have problems suggest you contact tech support.
EndNote X4/X5/X6 and Word 2010
Note: For EndNote X4 compatibility with the 64-bit version of Office 2010 , be sure to obtain the EndNote X4.0.2 update. EndNote X3 and earlier are not compatible with Word 2010. See the Word Processor Compatibility page for details.
EndNote X4/X5/X6 The simplest way to get the tools to appear in Word 2010 is to run the “Repair” function by selecting EndNote X4 and later in the “Add/Remove Programs” (“Programs and Features” in Windows 7 and Vista ) in the Windows Control Panel. Choose “Change” then select “Repair”. Click Next on each of these screens until the process finishes. Quit and restart all Office applications and check for the tools in Word.
EndNote X4/X5/X6 As an alternate method to installing the tools, you can do the following:
Open a command line. XP: Go to the start menu, choose “Run” and type: CMD Click OK.
much appreciated again. Unfortunately I’ve tried these and am already running with the patch. If anyone else is following with the same issue: I’ve also tried uninstalling and re-installing as well as going to “Change” and then “Repair” through Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs and also finally Start Menu → Endnote → Configure Endnote. Plus a few other things. On all of the fora I’ve visited usually one of these many things will fix this problem but for some reason I’m still having it.
I’ve sent an email to my local tech support (I obtained my copy of Endnote through my uni), so if I get any information that solves the problem I’ll post it.

Just checking that the EndNote add-ins appear in the “Active Application Add-ins” section of the MS Word Add-ins? (see attached) Otherwise they’re inactive and won’t work.
If they don’t appear in the “Active Application Add-ins” section locate the cwyw.dotm file in the “Inactive Application Add-Ins” section; click to highlight/select it the click the GO button.
When I first open any document and go into Options → Add-ins:
the “Endnote Cite While You Write” COMM Add-In and the “Endnote Web Cwyw.dotm” template fall under the Active Application Add-Ins heading but the “Endnote Cwyw.dotm” template falls under the Inactive Application Add-Ins heading. (Interestingly(?) whilst the Endnote Web toolbar is present, both the file locations listsed in Word Options for the Endnote Web and Endnote Cwyw.dotm template files is a folder that doesn’t exist if I follow the folders through… But anyway, possibly that’s another story!).
I can follow your post above or also go to Template or Word Add-ins and check the Endnote Cwyw.dotm so that it then appears in the Active list. However, the Endnote toolbar still does not appear (the Endote Web toolbar remains there still though) and if I close the document and then open it again I’ll be back at the start again.

After activating the EndNote CWYW.dotm file Instead of closing the MS Word document shut down the MS Word program then relaunch the program.
Thanks again CrazyGecko but still no luck. I’ve contacted my uni’s library/tech support and they suggested installing a different version of EndNote so I uninstalled X6 and then installed X5 only to have the exact same issue. I’m about to contact Thompson - in this current state my computer is useless for thesis writing and I really just need to be working.
For some reason the Endnote Web tools were showing rather than Endnote (apparently you can see one or the other). You can’t connect to Endnote Web without registering for an account, but after the login fails you can look at several options including a preferences section which basically allows you to choose Endnote instead of Endnote Web. Instructions below for anyone else who has this issue:
