I am trying to start a new document but want to use an old endnote library. I have opened the library and opened the word document but when I try to use the insert citations button from the EndNote X8 ribbon the search window is not connected to a library. I think I am missing some super easy solution but can’t seem to find the answer.

The issue could be the tab in Word is connecting to EndNote online instead of EndNote.
Please try the following steps to switch the tab in Word.
If that does not help then try these steps to insert instead:
To insert references selected in EndNote:
Open the Word document and position the cursor at the location where you would like the citation.
From the Tools menu, go to the EndNote submenu, and then select Go to EndNote. From the EndNote tab, select Go to EndNote.
Highlight the desired reference(s) in your EndNote library.
From the Tools menu in EndNote, select the Cite While You Write submenu and select Insert Selected Citation(s). From the EndNote tab, select Insert Citation, and then Insert Selected Citation(s).

You could also try the “go to endnote” icon on the EndnoteX8 ribbon/toolbar and see if it is jumping to the version of endnote with the old library open?
