numbering footnote citations

First, please excuse me for my english because I’m french. I work in chemistry and I’m using Endnote X3.

I’m using a modified ACS style (without titles) and I obtained something like this in the reference list at the end of my document :

1.            (a) Carnaud, C.; Lee, D.; Donnars, O.; Park, S.-H.; Beavis, A.; Koezuka, Y.; Bendelac, A.; Journal of Immunology 1999, 163 (9), 4647-4650; (b) Chin, Y.-W.; Balunas, M. J.; Chai, J. B.; Kinghorn, A. D.; The AAPS Journal 2006, 8 (2), E239-E253.

All is OK, because I need this notation 1 (a) then (b), etc …

But I’ve got a problem if I want to insert references in footnotes. I obtain something like this :

1 (uppercase) 1.          (a) Carnaud, C.; Lee, D.; Donnars, O.; Park, S.-H.; Beavis, A.; Koezuka, Y.; Bendelac, A.; Journal of Immunology 1999, 163 (9), 4647-4650;  (b) Chin, Y.-W.; Balunas, M. J.; Chai, J. B.; Kinghorn, A. D.; The AAPS Journal 2006, 8 (2), E239-E253.

I’m wondering how I can do to delete one of the number 1. I’ve try to change the style, but when I delete the number 1, the letters (a), (b) are deleted too !

The first number 1 is from the footnote, generated by Word. The second 1. is from the citation.

Can you tell me how I can solve this problem ?

Thanks a lot !

Nobody knows hox I can do it ?

Numbered styles cannot be used in conjunction with footnotes. That would create two sets of numbering in your document: one set of numbers referring to the reference list at the end, and one set of numbers referring to footnotes at the bottom of the page. How would the reader know where to look?

If you want to insert a note (rather than a reference) using a numbered style, the EndNote commands in Word include an “Insert Note” function. This will create a note within the list of references, numbered in the same sequence.  Such notes are not intended to include references. I suppose you could insert a note saying something like “These results have been disputed, see reference 1(b)”, but you would have to check later to make sure that reference 1(b) had not been renumbered as you inserted further references.

Thank you for your answer. I understand well what you mean with the “2 sets of numbering”. So it is not possible to have a footnote like this : 1 (a) reference x ; (b) reference y  ?

Thanks again,

Anne

To avoid two sets of numbering, footnote may be “numbered” by alphabet, like a, b, c, …

MS Word can do that when you make footnote. Then, your footnote would look like:

a. 1. (reference 1 at the end of document)

b. 5. (reference 5 at the end of document)

Would this be what you want? You could use other kinds of numbering, such as i, ii, iii, OR I, II, III, as well.

Thak you for your answer.

In ideal, I need to have, for example, 2 references under the same number. The references will be noted (a) and (b). And I will obtain something like this :

  1. (a) reference 1 (b) reference 2

I can obtain it in the reference list, at the end of the document. But I doesn’t work in footnotes.

I’m trying the new X4 version of Endnote. Can anyone tell me if this version can solve my problem ?

Thanks a lot !
