Because it isn’t tagged in any way so that Endnote can easily parse what parts are what parts?
If you printed out a manuscript onto paper, it isn’t a seemless exercise to get it back into Word either… Same difference.
If you want to do this, make sure that you select a style which will provide the necessary tagging, such as EndNote Export or RefMan (RIS) Export.
Then save your bibliography as a text file (.txt). EndNote filters cannot import RTF files.
To reimport it, use the Import procedure and the filter which corresponds to the style you selected, such as EndNote Import or RefMan (RIS).
Thanks johneast for an excellent answer. I only wish I had read it before I exported as an rtf (and now can not locate the original library after updating to X3) – so I am trying to figure out how to reconstruct the library (400+ entries over six months of work) … I have one that is half that size, but not the large one that is current. I vaguely remember that it had a different suffix – not enlp – something shorter.
