Why are square brackets citation used in some papers?

I couldn’t figure out why square brackets citation are used in some papers! They are hiding who and when information and one needs to go back to the referencing list all the time to get these information

because they take up less space than author, year citations and result in more printed pages, which is money to publishers. I agree that author, year is more informative.

But currently nothing is printed out. All is available online! Since many years ago, I never printed one single article in a physical paper

I guess it isn’t about us! I is the publishers that decide how things are cited and referenced, not endnote and certainly not the authors or the readers. That is why there are thousands of publishing styles associated with endnote rather than just one.
