Win7, Word 2007: change unformatted layout

I’m trying to work out the fastest way to use Endnote CWYW, but find the lack of title in unformatted citations somewhat confusing, especially since I am doing a lit-based PhD where 80% of my references are from the same author. Unformatted citations in footnotes (using Turabian style) are the fastest way to cite while I am writing… but is there a way to change what is displayed in the footnotes when unformatted, so it isn’t just a reference number but actually includes the title of the reference?

Yes, and no. You can change the fields in an unformatted reference, but not to the title. If you go to the EndNote program and to Edit>Preferences (that’s EndNote > Preferences on a Mac), there’s an option for Temporary Citations. Here you can elect not to use record number, but you only have a few choices; Label, Accession Number, or Pages. One possibility is that you could copy your titles to the Label field using Change/Move/Copy Fields, if you haven’t already been using your Label field for something else.

If that won’t work, you could also consider using EndNote online instead. EndNote X6 and X7 do come with EndNote online accounts. EndNote online uses title instead of record number by default, so that would be a consideration.

With EndNote, the default temporary citation format is the author year and record number surrounded by curly braces like the following:

{Smith, 2013 #34}

You can modify the temporary citation format to use the Label, Accession Number or Pages field instead of the Record Number, but there is no option to include the Title at this time. When you format the citations, it will do so in the style selected. Some styles are set to include the title information in the footnote section and some are not. If you are looking to format the citations properly in the footnotes, I would suggest the Turabian Bibliography rather than the Turabian Reference List style.

As Gillian said:

you can copy one field to another, so you can copy the title to the Label (or Accession) field, if you aren’t using it for something else.  You might prefer to do this on a copy of your library.  Unfortunately in my tests, existing records remain with the settings that were in place when they were inserted.  Only newly inserted citations appear to have the “label/title” that was copied to the label field instead of the record number.  Perhaps I haven’t found a key step…

Yes, Leanne, there IS a trick. Run format bibliography BEFORE you change the format in your preferences. Then, edit the preferences and unformat… EndNote will do the rest.
