Endnote X4/X5 and Mac OS 10.8 Mountain Lion?

WE SHOULDN’T HAVE TO DO THIS <<frustrated>> this is the role of the software engineers… I buy established products because they work and I don’t have to mess around like this…

PLEASE FIX THIS ISSUE, THOMSON, AND DON’T JUST PASS THE BUCK TO APPLE OR MS

Hello, StephenAcworth and other posters:

I am so sorry to hear you’re running into difficulties with this. After researching this issue, we’ve discovered that this issue is not just limited to EndNote and Word, but in fact many software packages are experiencing these lockups, errors, and slowdowns in 10.8.2.

Here are just a few examples of websites discussing the issue, both with EndNote and other third party software:

The logging off and back on works because it kills a background process running on the OS called appleeventsd. This process seems to be the source of all the trouble.

The good news is that the workarounds are easy. You can either log off and back on as you have been doing, or you can open your Activity Monitor and choose to kill the appleeventsd process. Either one should get you back up and running.

The bad news, however, is that as this is a 10.8.2 issue affecting lots of software packages and not something either EndNote or Word have control over, we have to look to Apple for the fix. We have been in contact with them and they are aware of this issue.

If you’d like to help Apple prioritize this problem, please send them a message at http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html.

We are sorry for the trouble, and join you in hoping Apple can resolve this issue soon.

Apparently have the same problem, running Endnote X5 with Word 2011 on OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2. I search the library, and everything freezes until an Endnote error message appears, allowing we to cancel the search window. I have tried deleting the associated plist files, the Normal.dotm template and the OLE cache and database, but with no success. I note that no library is listed in the status bar running along the bottom of the search window. Is this significant? EndNote is running with the library I am trying to search open.

One further note: the author of the first post Gillian Neff links to describes a ‘medium term’ solution for developers:

‘Medium-term, the applications sending the events can be rewritten to use typeKernelProcessID rather than typeSignature or typeApplicationBundleID to specify the target application.’

Could Thomson Reuters not consider this as an option?

I am not convinced that appleeventsd is the only problem here.

Like some others who have posted here, I had problems with Endnote freezing with formatting references with 10.8.2 and Word 14.2.4. A restart or logging out/back in did not fix it. I downgraded to 14.2.3 and things seem to be working again.

I am compitant, but a novice, i have no idea what was happening when following these instructions, so was rather scary.

but it worked a treat!!!

thank you sooo much!!!

this should be highlighted and pinned!:smileyvery-happy:

@men5j2s:

can you be more specific? which instructions helped you out? What problem were you experiencing?

System: OS X 10.8.2, Endnote X4, Word 2011, all updates, patches, fixes installed.

Problem: When Word and Endnote are started for the first time after a reboot, all is fine and easy. When the Macbook was in sleep mode before, then starting a “find citation” command in Word results in a 2 Minute freeze that ends with the message "** EndNote is not responding. Error = -1712".**

Restarting Endnote or Word does not help, restarting the computer does.

And, luckily, killing appleeventsd in the activity monitor also helps. Killing it and then restarting Word and Endnote does the job.

Hi,

I’m having the same problem as other users. but logging on and off is not working, and the applevent?? is not a program running on my computer according to my activity monitor.

I’m on OSX Mountion Lion software, with endnote. And getting both the 609 and 1712 errors.

Hello:

If you are not seeing appleeventsd, it must not be the same issue. I recommend contacting our technical support at http://endnote.com/support/contact-support to troubleshoot this problem.
