Formatting in-text citation brackets (paranthesis)

 Hello!

I tried searching to find a previous post on my problem, but didn’t succeed. I’m currently working on a Mac OS 10.5, Word 2008 and EndNote X2 using “Harvard” style.

My problem is this: By default the in-text citation looks like this: (Rochet, 2007) or (Evans and Schmalensee, 2005), with paranthesis around the whole citation.

I need the citation to only have paranthesis around the year-field so that all my citations look like this: Rochet (2007) or Evans and Schmalensee (2005). Is there a way to format the defualt template for in-text citations?

I know that I can edit the citation and exclude the author(s), but then I’ll have to manually wright the author(s) and edit all my citations which will accumulate a huge amount of work…

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

What you should try to do is take the following steps:

  1. In EndNote, go to Edit > Output Styles > Open Style Manager…

  2. In the Style Manager you’ll see all the EndNote styles, select and double-click the Harvard style here.

  3. Go to Citations, in that small menu you’ll find Templates

  4. The default template should look like this:  (Author|, Year)

5. Now put the paranthesis around Year, like this:  Author|, (Year)

  1. Now close the menu and click yes when it sais “Save changes to EndNote style…”

  2. If you had Word opened all this time, try selecting another style and then changing it back to Harvard again and it should work.

I hope this works for you. Good luck!

Thank you so much for both the quick response and easy to follow instructions!

Hello

Thank you, very useful and easy description. Can I add one more question?By any chance are there any way to have two template at the same time? Or any way to have a formatting like this?

According to Tavallali(2010) the most widely used AI optimization tool used in this context, is Genetic Algorithm. However, as tabu search has fewer adjustable parameters, its performance is more effective than GA or simulated annealing (SA) ( Grossmann and Biegler, 2004).

At/in the beginning/middle of sentence AUTHOR**(YEAR)** and at the end (AUTHOR, YEAR)? Thank you for your help.

Thank you for  your reply and your time…

The easiest way to streamline the process, is to work with CWYW off; then, you can drag the author out of the parentheses.  You can even do that from a formated reference, although you would also  still need to go in and edit the citation to hide author in the citation itself , or it will “reappear” there .

Thank you Leanne, I am longing for the answer, and it is very practical in the way you suggested:

  1. Insert citation like (ABC, 1990),

  2. then draw the author out, like ABC(1990),

  3. the system will ajust citation to become: ABC(ABC, 1990).

  4. Right Click on the parenthesis, Edit citation–> exclude author.

Benefit: this practice can make sure the citation is consistend and auto-adjustable for three and more author. Since the author is generated automatically, if there is three and above authors, it will appear ABC et. al. at the 2nd time wecite it, and all we should do is to draw it out without editing the format of author.

I used the procedures that you suggested, it worked great when I’m inserting one citation. But it goes messy when I try to insert two or more citation at once. For example, I want John (1999, 2000), not John(1999; John 2000). I’m using EndNote X2.

thx

I really don’t see how Endnote could be expected to notice where the reference is in a sentence structure…

Sure, but Endnote could have an option of using a different citation format for individual references, i.e. a manual override option.  I would find this very helpful because I use a good mix of the two in-text formats the original poster mentioned.

I like your answer but it is not working. I’m still having the comma when I exclude the author from the citation.

Any idea how to overcome the problem?

Thanks

make sure there are no spaces between the groups.  Best to unformat to temporary citations then find and replace any } { (with a space between them) to }{ (with no space between them). Of course most spaces are invisible, so you need to know how many there are.

Hi,

I have a question. I have just downloaded Endotes X7. I am using CWYW with Chicago 16th A output style. I can enter the unformatted references into my document. The problem is that when I go to Endnotes and select ‘Update Citations & Bibliography’ or ‘Configure Bibliography’ the unformatted references simply disappears from the document.

Can anyone please advise me how to rectify this problem - or what I am doing wrong? Thanks, Jo

I’m having the opposite problem. I’m using Chicago 16th Author-Date which requires that in text citations be in the format of (Brown 2003) but it is displaying as Brown (2003).

I followed the instructions given here to locate the citation template for Chicago 16th Author-Date and found it shows two formats. The first is titled Citation and looks like (Author Year|, Cited Pages|). The second is titled Citation - Author (Year) and looks like Author (Year|, Cited Pages|).

For some reason, the first option is not showing up on the drop-down menu in CWYW when I insert a reference. I tried deleting the Citation-Author (Year) from the template but EndNote continues to use that format as the default.

A couple weeks ago I wrote a paper using Chicago Author-Date and the default option in the drop down menu was (Author Year) not Author (Year), so I’m not sure what has happened.

I am trying to enter a single citation, not a group citation. The problem is that the (Author Year) option does not appear, only Author (Year).

I’m attaching 2 screen shots of the problem.

Problem solved.  If I click Insert instead of choosing one of the options from the drop down box, it gives me the correct format (Author Year).

Thanks!

Hi. Actually, it is another question. I am writing a paper and it is happening something weird. For example: the first time I mention a paper it is perfect (Rosa et ., 2016). But the second time the citation changes for Rosa, Borstad, 2016. The references are not duplicate at the end of the paper. But, they are changing inside the text. Could you help me? have you ever seen it?

Thanks,

Dayana
