To confirm, we’ve identified a single setting workaround which is to uncheck the “Check for Changed Citations” setting in the Instant Formatting preferences. You should be able to untick this option alone and the issue will be avoided. This issue is on the list to address in our Fall update.
" This issue is on the list to address in our Fall update." (by EnNote TeamMember Mathilda)
I’ve installed the new X6 version on my WIN7 32bit machine with Office/Word2010. And I can assure you that you did not address the issue properly in the new version. So there is all this fancy stuff like “Rating” but then it is still lacking its basic functionallity.
The proposed work around seems to work. However, it took me far too much time ot realize that when I change the settings as proposed through Endnote and after that Word crashes (which it did far too often), the new settings are lost. Thus for all who try the work around: make sure you change the settings according to the suggestions, then save your open document without any other changes, close Word and Endnote (if that is not already coupled with closing Word). Then you might re-open your file and start editing.
BTW: In case of a Word-crash through a server overload (before taking the above mentioned measures) you can close endnote as soon as Word gets stucked, however, if you open the Windows Task Manager you will discover, that there is still an “endnote” process running. This prevents you from beeing able to reopen endnote. Just shut up the process and the Endnote restart works.
So, Endnote team: Please come up with a solution ASAP!
The Fall update I was referring to is for EndNote X6 specifically. For all versions, the current recommendation to unselect the “Check for Citation Updates” option in the Instant Formatting Preference should help prevent the freeze.
This workaround has addressed the issue for many people. If it is not addressing it for you, please contact technical support. It may be specific to dealing with footnotes, as opposed to in-text citations.
I had a temporary problem with X5 and Word 2010. When I uninstalled “send to bluetooth” the problem was completely solved. See this thread hereor search the endnote forums for “bluetooth”
Mathilda, I can confirm that this is not confined to footnotes, which I used merely as an example of simple everyday wordprocessor operations. It happens with everything you place into a document that has Endnote citations formated. It seems that there are only 2 solutions (both of which are bothersome and undesirable): 1. to turn citation formatting off, so you have to live with the braces and no generated bibliography. Then you can move bits and pieces of the same or another document without crashing Word or Endnote. 2. to work with very small documents only (I have not tested this one). I do not count as a solution at all to copy the text without citations and to enter the citations afresh. The best solution, however, would be if Endnote could finally get their act together and fix this programming error. Hoping for the best J
I can confirm that this problem is even more frequent with X6.
Only the X5 build (without the later update 5.0.1) is free of this problem. There you can cut and paste as you like without any freeze. The “switch to” options also works well with that build
Should have added, “the problem” is word crashing when copy/cut and pasting text with references in.
I’ve tried unchecking the automatic updates of references and the options of convert to-and-from unformatted references is obviously pointless if you are making iterative changes to a large document.
This is a very long thread now, and not sure if this has been suggested. I too have had a few crashes with Word2010 and Endnote and not sure what is causing them. In the past I cut and paste formated sections of the text all the time, so am surprised that this is now an issue. I wonder if there are corrupted refs and if going thru the unformat citations, removed all field codes and then reformating the document, might fix the problem with the document. (and I still aways turn off the html linking to the ref list, until the very end, if I want it at all, as it does significantly implact speed, in a long document with many refs). It might be associated, in my case with a document being opened at various times in Word 2003, Word 2007 and/or Word 2010, and maybe the different versions of word are slightly different in how the field information is stored? Grasping at straws here.

This fixes nothing for me. Endnote is still unusable.
I am not using footnotes.
Is this going to be fixed or is the recommendation to check out Zotero (which I hear is fantastic)?
Not sure if anyone has posted this solution before, but I also had the same problem (win 7 x64 + EndNote x5 frequently freezing).
I managed to solve this problem after realising that co-authors inserted some citations that goes automatically to ‘traveling library’, and whenever I moved or deleted texts including references from this library (mixed with references from my home library), freezing was the outcome. The solution was to import references from traveling library to my home library: go to EndNote tab in word, select ‘Export to EndNote’ and then ‘Export traveling library’.
Unfortunately, Word keeps on freezing making it impossible to incorporate changes in my documents when there are citations involved. Am I correct saying that in more than one year no solution has been found yet?
So far for me a working trick is to disable Instant Formatting option (ENdNote X5 -> Bibliography, click on the arrow to access properties -> Instant Formatting -> Turn off). The only thing is to remember to Update Citations and Bibliography when needed. This solution probably offsets the purpose of CWYW, but at least I can work on my documents without constant freezing.
Here’s one more with this pesky problem, today I have had about 5 times when Endnote X5 has crashed dragging Word 2010 with it on a Win 7 64 bit system. This problem has been persistent for time I have had the program which I paid good money for and as it seems no solution has been posted but customers seem to be expected to buy a newer version of Endnote is of course not helpful. I am on my way to stop using the program once current project is finished. This is just not acceptable for a commercial program that claims to be ‘professionals choice’.
